The Dangers Of Sitting All Day

Most of the modern-day population are living with some kind of muscular dysfunction. Years of performing the same actions such as sitting at a desk, driving, standing and using smartphones has had a massive impact on the level of dysfunction in our bodies. This happens because our bodies are held in the incorrect posture.

Over time, this eventually causes issues with the muscles, joints and our physical alignment, leaving us with pain and a limited range of movement. Dysfunction in one area of the body has a knock-on effect throughout the whole body, leading to issues in other areas.

Modern-day sedentary lifestyles

A large proportion of jobs these days are sedentary, with many people spending 8-10 hours each day sitting at a desk or driving. The effects of such prolonged periods of sitting include poor posture, tension in the neck and shoulders, and lower back pain. It’s therefore not surprising that around 85% of our clients come to see us with some form of back pain!

When someone’s sitting all day there are a certain number of muscles in the body that are “stuck” in one position for many hours. It is unnatural for the human body to be in one static place for a long time. Think about where our design has evolved from – if you go back thousands of years, we were either chasing the big toothy monster for our dinner or it was chasing us! There was no modern technology there to do everything for us like there is today. In essence, thousands of years ago we moved more and the human body was designed to move.

Deep Tissue

Deep Tissue massage is a systematic manipulation of the soft tissues of the body that focuses on muscles relevant to a particular sport. Many different movements and techniques are used in Deep Tissue massage. Examples of these techniques include Swedish style massage, vibration, gliding, stretching, percussion and trigger points etc. These movements and techniques are used to try to help the athlete’s body achieve maximum performance and physical conditioning with a decreased chance of injury or pain and a quicker recovery.

Swedish Massage

Swedish massage is a great way to relax the entire body. This is done by rubbing the muscles with long gliding strokes in the direction of blood returning to the heart. I use long smooth strokes, kneading, and circular movements on superficial layers of muscle using massage lotion or oil. A Swedish massage is exceptionally beneficial for increasing the level of oxygen in the blood, decreasing muscle toxins, improving circulation and flexibility while easing tension.

Aromatherapy

After an initial discussion with the client, specific essential oils are used in conjunction with other appropriate techniques, such as massage, acupressure, or reflexology. Put into a base of various types of oils, the essential oil is absorbed through the skin and into the body to affect physiological change. When inhaled the aroma directly affects the limbic area of the brain that is related to emotions and memories.

At Nav Pain Clinic And Massages, we believe in using a holistic approach to therapy, integrating the mind, body, and spirit of the individual.  Therefore, aromatherapy sessions are complemented by incorporating the use of essential oils that are specifically for therapeutic purposes for some clients.

Indian Head Massage

This soothing yet energising therapy has been practised all over India for thousands of years. Treatment is carried out whilst the client is seated in a comfortable chair and can be performed with or without oil. As is the case with the other types of massage therapy, Indian head massage helps to combat and bring relief from various stress related and physical health conditions such as tension headaches and migraine, muscular pain, and stiffness.

Tight knotty muscle fibres are smoothed and soothed, while sinuses are clearer. In this relaxed state, restful and restorative sleep usually follows. Many advocates of Indian head massage will tell you that that regular treatment also promotes a healthy head of hair!

Hot Stone

Hot stone therapy is a specialist massage that uses smooth, flat, heated basalt stones that are positioned along your spine, in the palms of your hands, along your legs and between the toes. Typically, from riverbeds, basalt stones are used for massage as they have a rich iron content that retains heat. Cold marble stones are often used in the treatment to help aid with detoxing and healing the body.
